What We Can Learn from the Greeks?

As National Greek Yogurt Day arrives, there’s never been a better time to reflect on how we eat, move, and live — and what the Greeks can teach us about doing it all with balance and joy. 🇬🇷

We commissioned a survey that reveals that while most Americans want to live more intentionally, the reality of modern life often gets in the way. The results show a growing desire to reset: to eat fresher, connect more deeply, and savor life’s simple moments.

The State of the American Plate

According to our survey of 1,000 adults across the U.S., 55% of Americans say their diet is half fresh and half processed. This is a sign of just how busy life has become.
Packaged foods may be convenient, but they often come at the expense of simplicity, balance, and health, the very values at the heart of the Mediterranean way of life.

Just 31% report eating mostly fresh food, and while the intention to do better is there, the daily routine often wins. As one respondent put it: “I know what I should be eating, I just don’t always have the time.”

Craving Simplicity

When asked what part of Mediterranean living they’d most like to embrace, 42% of Americans said “simpler, fresher food.”

For Gen Z, that number rises to 55%, suggesting that younger generations are especially hungry for more mindful eating habits.

Yet despite this aspiration, 57% of Americans do their grocery shopping at big-box stores, while only 5% visit local farmers’ markets, showing that access and convenience still shape our food choices more than we’d like to admit.

Beyond the Plate: Wellness in Everyday Life

Mediterranean living isn’t just about what’s on your plate, it’s about how you live. Nearly 87% of Americans agree that spending time in nature directly impacts their health and happiness, yet fewer than one-third prioritize it regularly.

When asked what the biggest lesson is to take from Greek culture, 36% said “to slow down and savor life.” Another 30% said “to live with purpose and balance.” It’s a reminder that longevity is built on small, consistent acts, from how we eat to how we connect.

Redefining “Living Well”

Our survey also found that one in three adults define “living well” as feeling strong, energized, and well in their body, not luxury, status, or material comfort.

It’s a refreshing perspective that echoes the simplicity of Mediterranean life, where health and happiness are deeply intertwined.
